CHAPTER 9

Harrison knew the roads well. I could tell he’d driven them many times because he was able to hug the curve of the road, going at a good clip of speed without braking around even the biggest hairpin curve that ran alongside one of the deepest cliffs of the forest.

I gripped the wheel and let up on the gas to make sure I did make it around the curve. Once out of it, I pushed the pedal of my little Ford to at least be in sight of him.

When I didn’t see him, my heart started to beat with anxiety. Did he see me? Did he turn off? All sorts of ridiculous ideas popped into my head. Then I wondered what Christine had told him and if it possibly scared him off from hanging around downtown.

He wasn’t a runner, so why was he there?

I’d already heard that killers liked to join in on activities in the community after the murder due to the fact their ego side gets a sick kick of enjoyment hearing people talking about the murder.

Was this the case?

Puffs of chalk from a gravel drive caught my attention, and when I stopped shy of it, I noticed the brick mailbox. A cemented name was encased on the side.

Callis.

Harrison had brought me right to Garrett’s family home. Was Garrett hiding out here?

“Surely Al came here first,” I muttered and decided to take my chance to follow Harrison’s car to see what I could find out.

Harrison’s car was parked, and he wasn’t in it. I parked next to him and got out.

I looked around to check out my surroundings. I grabbed my phone from the passenger seat and left the keys in the ignition as I got out of the car.

“Can I help you?” I heard a voice come from the side of the house. It was Harrison.

“Hi.” My lips quivered a smile and then drew in a thin line, bouncing back and forth between the two since I wasn’t sure what I was walking up on. “I’m here to talk to Garrett.”

“I’m here to find him.” Harrison stuck his hands in the pockets of his jeans. “Who are you?”

“I’m a friend of Christine Watson’s.” When I mentioned her name, his body relaxed, and his face softened.

“You’re the crime-solver-type person but not really.” He didn’t seem to have the words. “You fixed up the old campground.”

“Yeah.” I nodded. “How did you know?” I asked.

“I saw Christine at the race, and she told me all about Garrett and the whole Mitchell thing.” His eyes lowered. “She pointed you out. Did you follow me here?”

“Maybe.” I gnawed on my lip. “It’s part of that whole crime-solver-type-person thing.” I used his own words to explain why I was there.

“I see what you did there.” He smiled. “I tried calling Garrett, and he didn’t answer. I talked to him at the Red Barn the other night. He said his parents had gone to visit family out of town, and he was staying here.
